IPR External Oil Cooler Kit for Ford 6.0 PowerstroIPIPR'sIPR is the first and only manufacturer to develop a water cooled external oil cooler kit for the 6.4 Powerstroke that bypasses the internal OEM cooler. The benefits of using this kit will allow the coolant to be filtered at 100% duty cycle with our high flow coolant filter which features a serviceable stainless steel filter element. The optional coolant filter in this kit is not a bypass filter like most other "coolant filter kits" on the market where they are designed as a bypass filtration that filters only 10-15% of the coolant. IPR's coolant filter is designed to completely filter out all contaminates before any coolant is fed into the externally mounted oil cooler. The additional benefits of an externally mounted oil cooler is that the oil cooler is allowed to work more efficiently. The OEM internally mounted design inhibits more heat when mounted inside the engine block.

IPR's external mount design will save you thousands of dollars in labor if a oil cooler is to ever fail again by allowing the technician to replace oil coolers in less than 1 hr. An average labor cost to replace a OEM oil cooler can cost upwards of $1500-2500 plus the cost of $450 for a new oil cooler/turbo install kit. This kit will pay for itself if you have 1 oil cooler failure. This kit retails for $1499, includes a new OEM oil cooler.

Disclaimer

The 6.4 External oil cooler kit allows you to leave the defective OEM oil cooler in place and avoid the cost of lifting the cab to replace the defective oil cooler for a temporary fix. IPR does not recommend operating your vehicle with a defective oil cooler for long term use. If your OEM oil cooler has ruptured it is necessary to remove the OEM oil cooler, operating your vehicle with a ruptured oil cooler will cause sever engine damage.

Stainless Steel Braided Hose
Stainless steel braided hose is much more durable than our standard hydraulic hose. The stainless steel hose's upgrade features AN fittings that can be disassembled and reused. This is a great option if you want to make custom lengths for your application by simply purchasing longer hoses. Stainless steel braided hose also makes your engine bay stand out and give it the custom look!
 
 
Extra Filters
IPR makes servicing your oil filter easy. Filter kits include orings proprietory to IPR's External Oil Cooler kit. Save on shipping fees by ordering extra filters.
Filters can also be purchased through your local auto parts store however the orings required will not be included.
 
IPR Aluminum Coolant Heater Tube
Take the opportunity to replace the OEM plastic heater tube while you have the turbo and intake manifold off. This aluminum heater tube is built to last. The OEM plastic tube will crack when they become brittle. Reparing a cracked tube can be a real nightmare, the turbos and intake manifold must be removed to gain access to the OEM plastic heater tube.
 
IPR highly recommends upgrading to our High Flow Coolant Filter  or CF2 Coolant Filter. Both coolant filter has the capability to filter 100% of the coolant before it enters your exteranlly mounted oil cooler. Both coolant Filter features a serviceable stainless steel filter element, a neodymium magnet which attracts microscopic metallic particles such as rust from cast iron fallout from the engine block.
The CF2 is our latest coolant filter design which features built in Tri-Directional valve. The 3 way valve allows the user to shut off coolant flow to service the filter or turn it to bypass mode

Benefits and FAQ regarding IPR's External Oil Cooler Kit

IPR solved 2 major problems with the Ford 6.4 oil cooler failure issues. First, by removing the internally mounted OEM oil cooler and relocating it to the driver side under the master cylinder we are able to reduce the amount of time/labor it would normally take to service the oil cooler. You can swap out a brand new oil cooler in as little as 1hr should you need to replace it for any reason. Second, by mounting the OEM oil cooler externally we were able to filter the coolant 100% before any coolant ever enters the oil cooler.

Q. What happens to the OEM oil cooler that was mounted inside the engine?

A. The OEM oil cooler is replaced by IPR's patent pending bypass manifold. The bypass manifold is a bolt in replacement that has 3/4" passages that allow the coolant and oil to continue it's OEM design pathways and is then routed out to IPR's billet aluminum oil filter cap, out to the oil cooler and back into the oil supply system.

Q. Where is the oil filter located?

A. The oil filter is located in the factory oil filter housing just like the OEM oil filter.

Q. Where can I buy oil filter if I need to service my truck?

A. Oil filters can be purchased from IPR through our website or you can purchase them at any NAPA auto parts or local auto parts store. They are over the counter common filters manufactured by WIX.

Q. Do I have to remove the oil hoses off the filter cap everytime I change my oil filter? Seems like a hassle.

A. The 2 oil hoses do need to be removed to replace the oil filter, however it's a small inconvenience, in most cases you can loosen the 2 oil hoses in less than 1 minute once every oil change interval is a small inconvenience.

Q. Why do I have to purchase the IPR External Oil Cooler Kit when I can just install a coolant filter in my truck with a OEM oil cooler mounted internally inside the engine.

A. Unfortunately the design of the OEM internally mounted oil coolers gets clogged up by contaminants such chemical breakdown, cast iron corrosion fallout and casting sand from engine maufacturing and the coolant supply for the OEM oil cooler is fed directly from the engine block into the oil cooler. There is no way to intercept the coolant "before" it enters the OEM internally mounted oil cooler. All aftermarket coolant filters only filter coolant after contaminants have passed through your OEM oil cooler, thus making your OEM oil cooler the primary filter which can get real expensive to service.

Q. The External Oil Cooler Kit is expensive it's out of my budget.

A. Considering a new OEM internally mounted oil cooler cost about $350-$410, intake gasket kit/turbo install kit $170 and labor to remove/install a new oil cooler can cost from $1500-$2500. The next time you need to replace your clogged oil cooler the kit will pay for iteself and more.

Q. Why do I have to purchase the IPR External Oil Cooler Kit when I can just install a coolant filter in my truck with a OEM oil cooler mounted internally inside the engine and flush out the coolant system?

A. In cases where a OEM oil cooler has ruptured where coolant and oil has mixed into the coolant system it is extremely difficult to flush out all the oil residue, unfortunately a new OEM oil cooler must be installed in order to flush out the mess, this will lead to contamination of the brand new oil cooler that was just installed.

Q. I see that IPR offers a High Flow Coolant Filter, is this filter included in the kit?

A. The 6.4 High Flow Coolant Filter is opitional and must be selected prior to check out.

Q. What is the advantage of IPR External Oil Cooler Kit in comparison with a air cooled type kit mounted in front of the truck?

A. There are many reasons why a water cooled system is much more effective. We will go into detail on this subject.

Q. Will I have to purchase any other components to make this kit work in different climates?

A. No additional components will need to be purchased. Other aftermarket kits in the market require you to purchase a thermostat kit that can cost up to $350 for cold climate use. The IPR kit requires no additional parts to make the oil cooler kit operate properly.

1. Air cooled oil cooler cores require a substantial amount of space in front of a vehicle for it to work efficiently. In most cases an air cooled oil cooler will restrict air flow to your radiator, AC condensor, Intercooler, transmission cooler etc. The large air cooled oil cooler restricts enough air flow to the condensor that it will  diminish AC performance as well as radiator and intercooler performance. There is limited space in the front of a 6.4 powered truck for any air cooled oil coolers to work efficiently. A properly sized air cooler will not fit in front of the truck without major modifications.

2. Air cooled oil coolers require air flow (increased vehicle speed) and outside air temperature to operate efficiently. In an extreme condition when a vehicle towing a heavy load up a grade on a hot day, the vehicle speed is limited due to the increased load from towing, climbing and higher engine RPM resulting in less air flow and hotter outside air temps. The problem is exaggerated when a heavy duty fan clutch is installed which will cause parasitic power loss and increased load on the engine also resulting in decreased fuel economy.

Water cooled oil coolers rely on the OEM radiator as a heat exchanger to cool the oil down. The radiator used in the front of the vehicle is the largest heat exchanger on the vehicle which is very efficient. In our opinion an air cooled oil cooler must be as large as your radiator in order for it to be as efficient. IPR External Oil Cooler Kits require no additional fans or components.

3. Cold weather performance with water cooled oil cooler is also more efficient during warm up. The same coolant used to cool the oil down in hot weather is also used to heat the engine oil up to normal operating temperatures much more effectively and more consistently. The OEM thermostat will remain closed to aid the coolant in reaching normal operating temps much sooner than an air cooler. During cold climates an air cooler will constantly cool oil temps as you are driving and trying to warm it up.

4. Water cooled is the future! The new Powerstroke 6.7 utilizes coolant to control excessive temps on the transmission, oil cooler and intercooler. Most of all manufacturers are ultilizing liquid to liquid oil coolers.
